St. Patrick’s Elementary and Junior High School, named after St. Patrick of Ireland—a fifth-century Romano-British Christian missionary and Bishop in Ireland—has a rich history intertwined with the mission of the SMA (Society of African Missions) Fathers in Liberia.
The opening of the new mission in Grandcess led to the establishment of St. Patrick’s School in 1920. Initially, the church and school were named St. Mary Church and School, located along the airfield road in Grandcess. It later became known as St. Patrick’s Elementary and Junior High School, likely before the 1960s when it was elevated to junior high level. The name change may have been influenced by the Irish missionaries' desire to honor St. Patrick, the primary patron saint of Ireland, and to aid in the conversion of the native population, whose socio-religious practices often conflicted with Christianity.
St. Patrick’s School continues to uphold its mission of providing quality education and fostering faith in the community, building on the legacy of the early missionaries and their dedication to evangelization through education.
