Who we are
The National Catholic Education Secretariat (NACES) of Liberia, established in 2015, plays a vital role in overseeing Catholic education throughout the country. NACES ensures that Catholic schools across Liberia’s 15 counties adhere to the oversight functions of the Ministry of Education while fostering academic excellence and upholding Catholic values. NACES Liberia provides essential resources for students and school personnel, facilitating quality education and holistic development. To achieve this, NACES Liberia consists of three (3) secretariats: The Archdiocese of Monrovia, The Diocese of Gbarnga, and the Diocese of Cape Palmas.
Archdiocese of Monrovia
The Archdiocese of Monrovia serves as a central hub for Catholic education in Bomi, Gbarpolu, Grand Bassa, Grand Cape Mount, Margibi, Montserrado, and Rivercess Counties. It oversees the administration and operation of Catholic schools within the Archdiocese, ensuring they adhere to the standards and values of Catholic education. The Archdiocese provides resources and support for school personnel, students, and families, including spiritual formation, curriculum guidelines, and professional development opportunities. It also coordinates events and activities that foster faith development and other engagements in the schools of the Catholic Archdiocese of Monrovia.
Diocese of Gbarnga
The Catholic Diocese of Gbarnga, established in 1987 in North-Central Liberia, encompasses Bong, Lofa, and Nimba Counties, covering 32,000 km² with 17 parishes and over 200 outstations. The diocese's mission is to propagate the Catholic faith and alleviate human suffering by addressing poverty's root causes through humanitarian and developmental services. It aims for effective community participation in sustainable development activities. Key historical milestones include the ordination of its first bishop, Benedict Dotu Sekey, in 1987, and subsequent leadership transitions to Bishop Lewis Zeigler in 2002 and Bishop Anthony Fallah Borwah in 2011. The diocese operates as a non-profit organization with various program departments.
Diocese of Cape Palmas
The Diocese of Cape Palmas is responsible for the Catholic schools in Grand Gedeh, Grand Kru, Maryland, River Gee, and Sinoe counties, guiding them to provide excellent education rooted in Catholic values. The Diocese supports schools through resource allocation, teacher training, and policy development, ensuring that all schools maintain a consistent standard of education. It also emphasizes the importance of spiritual and moral growth, integrating religious education and opportunities for worship into the school experience. The Diocese of Cape Palmas collaborates with local parishes and community organizations to support the holistic development of students.
Each diocese in NACES Liberia serves a vital role in promoting Catholic education, providing necessary support and resources to schools, and fostering an environment where students can grow spiritually, morally, academically, physically, and socially.
